Cupping Aftercare for holistic wellness massage: What to Do in the First 48 Hours

By Buena Vida Massage & Wellness | July 25, 2026

Visiting from Palm Beach, Riviera Beach, Lake Worth Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, or Greenacres? These aftercare steps are the same, even if you drove in to see us in Downtown West Palm Beach.

Cupping aftercare in West Palm Beach: what to do in the first 48 hours

We’ve had people come in saying they could barely walk, then leave moving like themselves again, and that’s exactly why aftercare matters. Your number one rule after cupping is simple: keep the treated areas calm and clean for 48 hours. That means no hot baths or saunas, no heavy sweating workouts, and no direct sun or swimming while your skin is doing its quick repair work.

In West Palm Beach, heat and humidity make it extra easy to overdo it. If you’re heading back out around Clematis Street or Rosemary Square after your session, think cool, quick, and gentle.

The first 0 to 48 hours after cupping: the exact do’s and don’ts

Cupping uses suction cups to improve blood flow, reduce tension, and promote healing. The marks you see are usually normal. Your job for the next two days is to avoid anything that keeps that area inflamed longer than it needs to be.

Quick rule for Downtown West Palm Beach days: If it makes you sweat, sting, or turn the marks bright red again, skip it for now.

0 to 24 hours

  • Keep the area dry and don’t scrub. A lukewarm shower is usually fine, but avoid hot water and skip exfoliating on the cupping spots.
  • Skip heat. No hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms, or long hot showers that keep the skin flushed.
  • Hydrate. Drink water like you mean it. In the WPB humidity, dehydration sneaks up fast.

24 to 48 hours

  • Hold off on intense workouts. Heavy lifting, HIIT, and long runs can keep marks darker and the area more irritated.
  • Avoid direct sun, pools, and the ocean. Sun and chlorine or saltwater can irritate cupping marks, especially if you’re a beach person and want the marks gone faster.
  • Go gentle with clothing. Tight straps or rough fabrics rubbing the marks can make them last longer.

The first week in West Palm Beach: keep marks from hanging around longer

Most people love how they feel after they leave here. We hear “immediate relief” a lot, especially in tight necks, hips, and the upper back. Protect that result by treating cupping marks like sensitive skin for a few more days.

If you’re a commuter coming through I-95 or Brightline and you’re back to a normal routine fast, keep one thing in mind. When you rush back into sun and sweat too soon, marks tend to stay darker and tenderness tends to stick around.

If you did wet cupping (blood drawn): follow the sterile dressing instructions you were given, change bandages as advised, and keep an eye out for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, or worsening pain.

  • Don’t pick at marks or scabs. Let them fade on their own.
  • Keep workouts moderate until the marks are clearly calming down. A light walk or easy mobility work is usually a better choice than pushing hard.
  • If you’re out around Clematis Street or Rosemary Square, plan for a quick cool shower after a hot day outside and avoid long sun exposure on treated areas.

Aloe, arnica, and “please don’t oil-bomb it”: simple topicals that help

Keep it basic. After cupping, the skin usually does best with gentle moisture and calming ingredients. We generally recommend a simple, fragrance-light moisturizer if the area feels dry, plus aloe or arnica if you’re trying to take the edge off bruising.

What we don’t love right after cupping is anything “hot” on the skin. Skip strong essential oils, intense menthol products, and heavy exfoliating acids directly on cupping marks until the skin looks normal again.

Comfort tip: If you’re sore, a cool compress for 10 to 15 minutes can feel great. Keep it clean and don’t press hard.

What’s normal after cupping, and when we want you to reach out

It’s normal to see round marks, feel mild tenderness, or feel like the area is “awake” for a day or two. Cupping therapy is generally safe, and our therapists are trained to keep the experience comfortable.

If you had wet cupping, treat it like any small wound. And no guessing games. If you notice fever, increasing redness, drainage, or severe pain, seek medical attention.

If something feels off, let us know. We’re easy to reach, and we’d rather answer a quick question than have you stress about it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, a lukewarm shower is usually fine. For the first 24 hours, keep it gentle: avoid hot showers, don’t scrub the cupping marks, and skip exfoliating on treated skin.

Cupping marks often fade over a few days, but timing varies based on your skin, the area treated, and how strong the suction was. Sun, heat, and heavy sweating can make marks linger longer, so keeping the area cool and protected helps.

We generally recommend postponing intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours. Light movement is often fine, but heavy lifting, HIIT, and anything that makes you sweat a lot can irritate the area and keep marks darker.

It’s best to avoid swimming for 24 to 48 hours. Chlorine and saltwater can irritate treated skin, and sun exposure usually makes marks last longer, which matters in West Palm Beach’s beach lifestyle.

Seek medical attention if you develop fever, increasing redness, drainage, or severe pain, especially if you had wet cupping where blood was drawn. Those can be signs of infection or a reaction that needs prompt care.
